On Friday April 10th Kiama rider Jay Gaffey set off from the Old Telegraph and Post Office (now the Illawarra Museum) in Wollongong, aiming to establish a new record to Nowra, some 73km to the south. While the weather was clear, Jay had to contend with extremely strong crosswinds, with peak gusts of 63kmh in Wollongong and an extraordinary 70kmh in Nowra. Despite the conditions Jay described as "questionable", she rode strongly throughout, reaching Kiama in just over an hour. The strong winds almost caused her to abandon the ride at several points, but she pushed on and reached the Old Post Office (now the Postman's Tavern) in Nowra in a new record time of 2hr32m21s.
