 At 6:22am on March 15, British rider Lawrence "Loz" Walters set off from South Mole Lighthouse at Fremantle, taking part in the unofficial Indian Pacific Wheel Ride to Sydney. However Loz had even bigger ambitions and after reaching Sydney he headed north. His eyes were set on the unsupported Around Australia record set by Danish rider Erik Straarup almost 17 years ago. As if that wasn't a big enough challenge, Loz was out to do it on a fixed gear. From Melbourne to Canberra he fitted a smaller 45 tooth chainring with a 22 tooth cog for the big climbs. For the rest of the ride he predominantly used a 49x16 combination, with the option of swapping to 17 and 19 tooth cogs. Across the Top End from Townsville he relentlessly hammered out the miles, sometimes achieving more than 400km at a time.  Through the Top End, and down the Western Australian coast, the margin was razor thin, and it wasn't until the last few days he started to pull ahead of Erik's pace. After several nail-biting days for "dot-watchers", Loz rolled back to the lighthouse on Sunday May 4th just after 8:30pm. His time for the 14,686km journey was 50d14hr7m, 10hr40m faster than the previous record. Loz raised more than £1,800 pounds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
